Asheville Holiday Weekend: Biltmore, Gingerbread, Winter Lights

A Friday-to-Sunday holiday weekend in Asheville with the big four in the right order — Christmas at Biltmore, the gingerbread houses, Winter Lights, the parade.

Asheville in the holidays is four big things and a hundred small ones. The big four — Christmas at Biltmore, the gingerbread houses at the Grove Park Inn, Winter Lights at the Arboretum and the Holiday Parade — each have their own dates, their own rules about when you can get in, and their own way of selling out. The small ones change every week, and the calendar modules below pull them live. Here's the weekend in an order that works, with the dates for 2026.

The big four, with dates

  • Christmas at Biltmore: November 3, 2026 to January 10, 2027; Candlelight Christmas Evenings to January 9, reservation only. From about $110 daytime, $130 Candlelight; online is $10 cheaper than the gate. The full guide.
  • The gingerbread houses at the Omni Grove Park Inn: November 17, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Free to see; public access Sundays after 6 pm and Monday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday kept for hotel guests and dinner reservations; $35 parking. The full guide.
  • Winter Lights at the NC Arboretum: November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027. A walk through more than a million lights in the gardens, with new scenes this year; tickets are per car in three price tiers by date, and peak nights sell out.
  • The Asheville Holiday Parade: Saturday, November 21, 2026 at 11 am, downtown. The 80th one; the theme is "A Vintage Holiday." Free.

America’s largest home · gardens, winery, village

Biltmore Estate

The 250-room Vanderbilt house, 8,000 acres of Olmsted grounds, a free wine tasting — and from November 3, the whole thing dressed for Christmas.

  • Priced by date · Christmas daytime from about $110 · Candlelight evenings from about $130 · online saves $10 a ticket
  • About 4 hours: 1–1½ in the house, the grounds, then Antler Hill Village and the Winery
  • Open daily, year-round · Christmas at Biltmore Nov 3 – Jan 10 · Candlelight Christmas Evenings Nov 3 – Jan 9, reservation only
  • All ages; the house is a lot of walking for under-fives — Antler Hill Village and the farmyard are the kids’ part

Ashe says Daytime in November is the calm version: lower prices, the decorations fully up. Candlelight is the one people fly in for — book the slot nearest sunset and you get the house in the last light and then in the dark. Buy online; it’s $10 a ticket cheaper than the gate.

Free holiday display · National Gingerbread House Competition

The Gingerbread Houses at the Omni Grove Park Inn

The country’s biggest gingerbread competition, on display in the hotel’s halls from November 17 to January 3 — free, with a catch about weekends.

  • Opens Tue, Nov 17
  • Free to view · parking $35 self / $45 valet (Oct 1 – Jan 3)
  • About an hour; two with a drink on the Sunset Terrace
  • Nov 17 – Jan 3 · public: Sundays after 6 pm and Mon–Thu · Fri–Sat for hotel guests and dinner reservations · closed to the public Nov 26, Dec 6, Dec 23–26, Dec 30–31, Jan 1
  • All ages

Ashe says Go on a Sunday after 6 or a weekday afternoon: do the display, then the Sunset Terrace with a drink while the sun drops behind Pisgah. On a weekend, a dinner reservation is your ticket in.

Walk-through holiday light show

Winter Lights at the NC Arboretum

More than a million lights through the Arboretum’s gardens, November 13 to January 3 — priced per car, so fill the seats.

  • Opens Fri, Nov 13
  • Per car, not per person · three price tiers by date (value / standard / peak) · Arboretum members $5 off · more at the gate
  • About 90 minutes
  • Nov 13 – Jan 3, evenings · peak nights sell out
  • All ages; strollers fine

Ashe says Tickets are per car — three price tiers by date — so a full car on a value night is the best deal in Asheville’s December. Buy ahead; the gate costs more and peak nights sell out. Dress warmer than you think. It’s a cold hollow.

Friday: arrive, eat early, candlelight

Check in and go to dinner before 6; downtown fills on December Fridays and most of the good rooms are on a 7:30 or 8 show. If Friday is your Candlelight night at Biltmore, book the slot nearest sunset (about 5:15) and eat in Biltmore Village after, five minutes from the gate; the Village is decorated too, and it's the easy dinner when you're coming off the estate. If Candlelight isn't tonight, this is the night for a show. Asheville's December calendar is thick with Nutcrackers, candlelight concerts in old churches, holiday comedy and theatre, and the live list has whatever's on:

Saturday: the estate by day, the lights by night

Morning: Christmas at Biltmore, daytime. Arrive 45 minutes before your house time, do the house first while you're fresh, then the Conservatory and the grounds, then drive to Antler Hill Village for the Winery tasting (included) and lunch. Four hours, done by 2. On parade Saturday, November 21, flip it: parade at 11 downtown, Biltmore in the afternoon.

Late afternoon: the Grove Park Inn. Not on a Saturday without a dinner reservation. The gingerbread is guests-only on Fridays and Saturdays, so either book dinner at the inn (which gets you in, with the Sunset Terrace at 4:30 for the sun going down over the Pisgah ridge) or save the gingerbread for Sunday evening, when the public is welcome after 6.

After dark: Winter Lights. The Arboretum is fifteen minutes south, right off the Parkway's Brevard Road entrance. A slow loop through the lit gardens and the woods; allow ninety minutes. It's priced per car, so a full car is the deal. Buy before you drive out: the gate costs more and Saturdays in December sell out. Dress warmer than you think; the Arboretum sits in a cold hollow.

Saturday night, if you still have legs:

Sunday: slow morning, gingerbread at six

Brunch runs to 2. If you skipped Biltmore's village yesterday, Antler Hill is a good Sunday afternoon on its own; otherwise walk Beaver Lake in North Asheville or Biltmore Village's shops. Downtown's shops and the Grove Arcade are dressed for the season and open Sunday afternoons, which is when the city is at its calmest. At 6 pm the Grove Park Inn opens the gingerbread to everyone: go then, do the Great Hall fireplaces and the lower-level displays, and have one drink before the drive home.

The small ones

The things that make the weekend are usually not the big four: a Nutcracker, a choral candlelight concert, a holiday market in a brewery, a Christmas show at a theatre in Black Mountain, a tree lighting with a block party around it. They're on the calendar from the day they're announced:

Where to base yourself

  • Downtown if you want to walk to dinner and shows and drive to everything else (Biltmore 10 minutes, the inn 10, the Arboretum 20).
  • North Asheville if the Grove Park Inn is the point: you're on the inn's side of town, and Beaver Lake and the Kimberly Avenue decorations are a morning walk.
  • On the estate (The Inn, the Village Hotel, the Cottages) if Candlelight is the point and you'd rather not drive afterward.
  • Biltmore Village for the middle ground: outside the gate, decorated, ten minutes to downtown.

What to know

  • Biltmore and Winter Lights are timed and ticketed. Buy both before you drive up; Candlelight and peak Winter Lights nights sell out.
  • The Grove Park Inn's weekend rule catches everyone. Sunday after 6 or a weekday, unless you've booked dinner. And it's closed to the public on November 26, December 6, December 23 to 26, December 30 and 31, and January 1.
  • Cold. Asheville in December is 40s by day and 20s at night; Winter Lights and Candlelight are both outdoors for a stretch. Layers, hat, gloves.
  • The Parkway. The Blue Ridge Parkway closes in sections for ice and snow with no notice; check the Park Service's road status the morning you plan to drive it, and don't plan a day around it after a cold snap.
  • Thanksgiving week and the week after Christmas are the two crowded ones. The first two weeks of December are the sweet spot: everything's open, nothing's full.
  • Rain. The gingerbread, the Biltmore house and the Conservatory are all indoors; Winter Lights runs in light rain. For the leaf-season version of this weekend, the fall color weekend is the same shape with the Parkway in it.
