Friday evening: arrive, walk, a show

Check in, then walk downtown before dinner: Pack Square, up Biltmore Avenue, across to the Grove Arcade and back along Haywood Street past the tiled dome of the Basilica of Saint Lawrence. It's a forty-minute loop and it's the city's best introduction.

Dinner at 6:30 near the venue, reserved days ahead: Cúrate on Biltmore Avenue for Spanish tapas in a converted bus depot, or Chai Pani in the South Slope if you want loud, fast and fun before a show at Eulogy. Then the show. The most romantic rooms in town are the small ones: a jazz quartet in the basement at Hotel Eve, a play at NC Stage, or, if the calendar lines up, a Candlelight concert at the Asheville Masonic Temple, a string quartet in a 1913 lodge lit by hundreds of candles. Those sell out weeks ahead; book before you book the hotel.

Nightcap within three blocks: Little Jumbo on Broadway for quiet and serious, The Crow & Quill on North Lexington for velvet and whiskey, Antidote at Chemist Spirits if you ended up on the South Slope.

Saturday: studios, mountains, sunset

Sleep in, then the Asheville City Market downtown for coffee and pastries from the stands. Late morning in the River Arts District: more than 200 working studios along the French Broad, most open on Saturdays. Start up the hill on Roberts and Depot streets, buy one small thing you'll keep, and have lunch at The Bull and Beggar on Paynes Way.

Afternoon on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Enter at Hemphill Knob by the Parkway Visitor Center, stop at the free Folk Art Center at milepost 382, and if the weather is clear, drive north to Craggy Gardens for the short walk to the bald and the biggest view near town. In June the rhododendron bloom; in October it's leaf season and everyone knows it, so go early. The road closes in ice.

Sunset at the Omni Grove Park Inn. The Sunset Terrace faces west over the city to the mountains and you don't need to be a guest; one drink at the right hour is the whole point. When it's cold, the Great Hall's two stone fireplaces are the backup.

Saturday night is the fullest on the calendar. If Friday was music, make Saturday comedy, a Modelface show or the adults-only haunted tour on the LaZoom bus, or the other way around. Dinner in West Asheville is easier to book: Jargon on Haywood Road is the cocktails-and-dinner room, The Admiral is the original.

Sunday: slow

Breakfast somewhere unhurried, then the Botanical Gardens at Asheville, ten free acres of native plants and a creek beside the UNC Asheville campus, empty on Sunday mornings. Then the Sunday jam: Jack of the Wood on Patton Avenue has bluegrass around lunch and an Irish session in the afternoon, no cover, or drive fifteen miles east to Pisgah Brewing in Black Mountain for the Sunday jam and a walk around Lake Tomahawk after. End at a brewery lawn with a band: Sierra Nevada in Mills River has free regional acts on its outdoor stage on weekend afternoons in season.

Unique things to do in Asheville for couples

  • Watch glass being blown. Lexington Glassworks on South Lexington is a working studio where you stand in the gallery and watch, free, most days.
  • Forty-five minutes in a salt cave. The Asheville Salt Cave on North Liberty Street is a room lined with salt, recliners and silence; private sessions for two exist and book ahead.
  • A ghost walk. Haunted Asheville leads evening tours through downtown's haunted history, good on a cold night and better in October.
  • A Candlelight concert. The Masonic Temple's string quartets by candlelight, above, are the single most-booked romantic evening in town for a reason.
  • A show in a historic room. The 1,000-seat Thomas Wolfe Auditorium at Harrah's Cherokee Center, or the Wortham Center's Diana Wortham Theatre for touring dance and chamber music.
  • Pinball, competitively. The Asheville Pinball Museum: one fee, unlimited play, a text when there's room.

Cheap things to do in Asheville for couples

A Parkway overlook at sunset costs nothing. So do the Botanical Gardens, the Folk Art Center, the glassblowing demos, a walk through the River Arts District, the Friday drum circle in Pritchard Park in warm months, the Sunday jams at Jack of the Wood, and the brewery shows at Highland and Sierra Nevada in season. One drink on the Grove Park Inn's terrace is the price of the best view in the city. The free things to do guide lists 25 at this price.

Things to do in Asheville for couples in winter

Winter is the quiet, cheap, cozy season, and the indoor calendar doesn't slow down: Candlelight concerts, jazz at Hotel Eve, theatre at NC Stage and the Wortham Center, comedy most weekends. The Grove Park Inn's lobby fills with the National Gingerbread House Competition entries from mid-November into early January, with non-guest viewing limited to certain days, and its fireplaces are the warmest seats in town. Biltmore's Candlelight Christmas evenings, with the house lit by candles and fireplaces and live music, are the big seasonal date and book up weeks ahead. The Parkway closes in ice, so trade the overlooks for a museum afternoon and the rainy-day guide.

Anniversary-level

The expensive, worth-it day is Biltmore: the house, the gardens, a tasting at the winery in Antler Hill Village, and an evening entry if it's the holiday season. Pair it with dinner at Cúrate, booked the day the reservation window opens, and a concert at the Wortham Center or a Candlelight show. Or a night at the Grove Park Inn itself, which turns the Sunset Terrace into your front porch.

If you only do one thing: a Candlelight concert on Friday, sunset on the Grove Park Inn's terrace on Saturday, and the Sunday jam at Jack of the Wood. Three different Ashevilles, none of them more than fifteen minutes apart. The weekend itinerary has the hour-by-hour version.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most romantic things to do in Asheville?

A Candlelight concert at the Masonic Temple, jazz in the basement at Hotel Eve, sunset from the Grove Park Inn's terrace, a Parkway overlook at dusk, and Biltmore at Christmas. For something quieter, the Botanical Gardens on a Sunday morning or the glassblowing demos at Lexington Glassworks.

Is Asheville a good place for a couples weekend?

Yes: it's walkable, there's a show every night, the mountains are twenty minutes away, and it's compact enough that dinner, a concert and a nightcap are all within three blocks. The trade-offs are weekend crowds in October and an early last call.

What is there to do in Asheville for couples in the winter?

Candlelight concerts, jazz, theatre and comedy run all winter; the Gingerbread House display at the Grove Park Inn runs from mid-November into early January; Biltmore's Candlelight Christmas evenings are the seasonal date. The Parkway closes in ice, so plan around indoor evenings.

What are cheap romantic things to do in Asheville?

A Parkway sunset, the Botanical Gardens, the Folk Art Center, glassblowing demos, the River Arts District, the Friday drum circle in summer, Sunday jams at Jack of the Wood and free brewery shows at Highland and Sierra Nevada. One drink on the Grove Park Inn's terrace buys the best view in the city.

Where should couples stay in Asheville?

Downtown if you want to walk to every show and bar; the Grove Park Inn if the view and the fireplaces are the point; Biltmore's own hotels if the estate is the whole weekend. Anywhere else, plan on driving or rideshare at night.

What are good anniversary ideas in Asheville?

A full day at Biltmore with the winery tasting, dinner at Cúrate, and a Candlelight concert or a show at the Wortham Center. In the holiday season, Biltmore's Candlelight Christmas evening is the one to book first.
