Things to Do in Asheville at Night: 17 Ideas After Dark
Things to do in Asheville at night: 17 ideas after dark, from concerts and comedy to cocktail bars, ghost tours and family evenings, plus tonight's live list.
Asheville at night is a music town first: on any given evening there's a touring act in a downtown club, a jazz quartet in a basement, a bluegrass jam in a pub and a comedian on a bus. Here is tonight's list, then 17 things to do in Asheville at night that don't depend on what's booked.

One thing to know before you plan: this is an early city. Most club shows start between 8 and 9, kitchens wind down by 10 on weeknights, and the sidewalks thin out after midnight outside the South Slope and Haywood Road. Plan the main event for 8 and the nightcap for 10, not the other way round. For the full night-out version, read the Asheville nightlife guide.
Shows and live music
1. A touring act at The Orange Peel
The club on Biltmore Avenue is the reason a lot of bands route through Asheville at all: a 1,000-capacity standing room with a famously good sound system and a bourbon bar, Pulp, in the basement for before and after. Rock, indie, hip-hop, electronic. Doors are usually around 7 or 8; buy from the venue, not a resale site.
2. Something smaller and stranger at Eulogy
Burial Beer's music venue on the South Slope books the acts that are too loud, too heavy or too odd for the bigger rooms, plus DJ nights. It's a short walk from the South Slope taprooms, which makes it the natural end of a brewery crawl.
3. An all-ages show at The Grey Eagle
Across the river in the River Arts District, the Grey Eagle is the mid-size room for Americana, folk, bluegrass and indie, and nearly every show is all ages. There's a taqueria attached and a patio stage for smaller acts in warm weather. Street parking on Clingman is free; get there early.
4. Jazz in a basement at Hotel Eve
Hotel Eve Jazz Club sits below North Lexington Avenue, down a set of stairs and through a gate, with a hidden courtyard. Local quartets and quintets most Thursday through Saturday nights, small covers, cocktails. It's the closest thing Asheville has to a proper jazz room.
5. A bluegrass jam at Jack of the Wood
The Celtic pub on Patton Avenue has traditional music most nights of the week: an old-time jam on Wednesdays, a bluegrass jam on Thursdays, a band on weekend nights and an Irish session on Sunday afternoons. The jams have no cover, and anyone with an instrument can sit in.

Comedy
6. Stand-up with Modelface or Disclaimer
Asheville comedy isn't one club; it's a couple of producers who bring touring and local comics into rooms around the city. Modelface Comedy runs most of the ticketed shows, and Disclaimer Comedy has a weekly showcase and open mic downtown. Check the listing for the room and the age limit; most are 18 or 21 and up.

7. The LaZoom comedy bus
The big purple bus leaves from Biltmore Avenue with a comedian in costume at the front and a loose version of Asheville history out the windows. There's a city tour, a haunted tour for grown-ups and a band-and-beer version; the kids' tour runs in the daytime. It goes rain or shine.
Drinks worth leaving the house for
8. A cocktail bar with a story
Downtown has three or four bars that are destinations on their own. The Crow & Quill on North Lexington is a dim, velvet, taxidermied room with an enormous whiskey list and live music some nights. Antidote, upstairs at Chemist Spirits on Coxe Avenue, pours the distillery's gin and bourbon on a rooftop-adjacent patio. Little Jumbo on Broadway is the quiet, serious one. Top of the Monk, upstairs from the Thirsty Monk on Patton, is the small, old-fashioned one. Reservations help on weekends at all of them.
9. A South Slope taproom crawl
The South Slope is a dozen breweries within a few blocks south of downtown, most of them open until 10 or later. Burial Beer on Collier Avenue, Green Man on Buxton Avenue, the Wicked Weed Funkatorium for sours on Coxe, and Asheville Brewing for pizza with the pint. Eulogy is in the middle of it, so pair a show with the crawl.
10. Sunset and a drink at the Grove Park Inn
The Sunset Terrace at the Omni Grove Park Inn faces west over the city toward the mountains, and the drink is the price of admission. Non-guests can visit; in the holiday season the lobby fills with the National Gingerbread House Competition entries, with viewing for non-guests limited to certain days, so check before you drive up.

11. Walk downtown's architecture
Downtown Asheville is an Art Deco town that was too broke to tear itself down in the 1960s, which is why it still looks like 1929. After dark the lit landmarks are the Basilica of Saint Lawrence with its tiled dome on Haywood Street, the Jackson Building on Pack Square, the City Building's pink roof, and the Grove Arcade, whose Page Avenue restaurants keep the block alive until late. The Asheville Urban Trail markers make a loop of it.
12. A ghost tour
Haunted Asheville runs walking tours of downtown's supposedly haunted corners, led by guides who know the real history as well as the legends. It's the most Asheville thing you can do on a cold night that involves no alcohol. Book ahead on weekends and in October.
13. The Friday drum circle
In the warmer months, drummers gather in Pritchard Park at the center of downtown on Friday evenings and play until it gets dark or the mood changes. It's free, it's loud, and it's the best people-watching in the city. It fades out in the cold months.

Things to do in Asheville at night with family
14. A baseball game under the lights
From April through September the Asheville Tourists play at HomeTrust Park, the old McCormick Field, a small 1920s ballpark on a hill above Biltmore Avenue. Weeknight games are cheap and over by 9:30, and Thirsty Thursday and fireworks nights are the ones kids remember.
15. College basketball at Kimmel Arena
Through the winter, UNC Asheville's men's and women's teams play at Kimmel Arena on campus in North Asheville. Tickets are inexpensive, parking is easy, and a weeknight game is a two-hour evening with a 10-year-old. The sports page has the schedule.
16. An early show or a family theatre night
A lot of the listings on this site start at 7 or 7:30, which is family territory. Asheville Community Theatre on Walnut Street leans toward musicals and family titles; the Wortham Center books touring dance, puppetry and family series; and the Grey Eagle's all-ages policy means a 12-year-old can see a real band. Ask Ashe for "all ages tonight" to filter.
17. Dessert and a walk
The French Broad Chocolate Lounge on Pack Square is open late most nights, and the line moves. Take the drinking chocolate across the street to the square, which is lit and busy until the restaurants close. In December, add the holiday lights at Biltmore, which sells timed evening entries for Candlelight Christmas and books up weeks ahead.
Saturday night specifically
Saturday is the fullest night: every room above is booked, dinner reservations go early, and the South Slope is shoulder to shoulder by 9. Buy any ticket you care about on Friday, eat in West Asheville if downtown is full, and expect to park in a garage. The this weekend page shows the whole weekend; the things to do this weekend guide has the plan around it.
If you only do one thing: pick a show from the list at the top, eat on the way, and finish with a drink within walking distance of the venue. That's an Asheville night, and it's over by midnight.

Ask Ashe about live music tonightFrequently asked questions
What is there to do in Asheville at night?
Live music is the main event: The Orange Peel, Eulogy, Revival and Asheville Music Hall downtown, the Grey Eagle across the river, jazz at Hotel Eve and jams at Jack of the Wood. Beyond music there's stand-up comedy most weekends, the LaZoom bus, ghost tours, the South Slope breweries and a handful of destination cocktail bars.
Is downtown Asheville safe at night?
Downtown is busy and well lit on weekend nights, and most visitors walk between dinner, a show and a bar without a second thought. Use the same sense you'd use in any city: park in a garage rather than a dark side street, and stick to the lit blocks around Pack Square, Biltmore Avenue, Haywood Street and the South Slope.
What time does Asheville shut down?
Earlier than you'd expect. Most kitchens close by 10 on weeknights and 11 on weekends, club shows end by 11 or midnight, and bars close at 2 am. The South Slope taprooms mostly close between 10 and midnight.
What can you do in Asheville at night with kids?
In season, a Tourists baseball game; in winter, a UNC Asheville basketball game. Year-round: early shows at Asheville Community Theatre or the Wortham Center, all-ages concerts at the Grey Eagle, dessert at the Chocolate Lounge and a walk around the lit square.
Where can you see the city lights at night?
The Sunset Terrace at the Grove Park Inn looks west over the whole city toward the mountains, and the Parkway overlooks just south of town face the lights of Asheville on a clear night. Downtown itself is best seen on foot around Pack Square and the Basilica.
Are there free things to do in Asheville at night?
The Friday drum circle in Pritchard Park in warm months, the jams at Jack of the Wood, brewery shows at Highland and Sierra Nevada in season, and a walk through the lit downtown. The free page lists tonight's free events.
